"The History and Archaeology of Morris Canal Plane 9 West".
Our last meeting, Jim Lee summarized the history of the Morris canal and talk in detail about the development of inclined Plane 9 West. Built in 1831, the inclined planes of the Morris Canal carried 90-foot-long, 80-ton canal boats out of the water and up a railed plane before dropping them back into the upper level of the canal, all using just water power. Plane 9 West, located just across the Delaware River in Stewartsville, New Jersey, was excavated by Jim's grandfather in 1971.
The Jim and Mary Lee Canal Museum at Morris Canal Incline Plane 9 West is located at 477 Route 519, Stewartsville, NJ. The museum is open the second Sunday of every month from April to October. More information can be found at: http://morriscanal.org/plane_9w.htp
